SRS Legal distinguished with "Private Equity Deal of the Year" at IFLR Europe Awards 2023
SRS Legal was distinguished at the IFLR Europe Awards 2023 with the Private Equity Deal of the Year award: Clearlake-Boehly / Chelsea FC.
This deal brought together several firms that together won this category: Latham & Watkins, Northridge Law, Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, Sidley Austin, Simmons & Simmons and SRS Legal (with José Luís Moreira da Silva and Mariana Silva Marques speaking).
The justification of the jury:
"The transaction sits in the crossfires of Russian sanctions and the rapidly growing trend private equity investment into sports. Russian sanctions triggered the deal, creating an unprecedented deal environment: a sanctioned seller; a target with frozen assets; heavy government involvement; a tightly controlled and accelerated schedule; and high stakes. These elements means that there were no reps and warranties and no future recourse.
While the handling of the implications of the sanctions creates an interesting precedent for study, the deal also represented the first between a PE firm and the English Premier League. The terms of the acquisition from this perspective were also closely watched by sport bodies and PE investors in Europe and the US."
